General information about Austria
Austria is a country in Central Europe. The two big neighbours are Germany in the north and Italy in the south. It borders on Switzerland and Liechtenstein to the west and the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary and Slovenia to the east and south-east. The country is divided into nine federal states.
More than half of Austria is in the Alps. The highest mountain in the country is the Großglockner at 3798 meters above sea level. In the east, on the other hand, it is flatter, and this is where Vienna is located: the capital has almost 2 million inhabitants and is by far the largest city in Austria. At the same time, Vienna is an independent federal state.
Most of the money in Austria is earned through trade and services. Banks are just as important here as the tourism industry: around 20 million tourists come to this country every year. Austria airline tickets are among the most frequently booked international flights.
In second place are energy, industry and the construction of new houses and roads. There are oil and gas fields. Industrial companies are very modern and their products are sold worldwide.
