Those planning a Ostrava trip have visited the third largest city in the Czech Republic. Ostrava is the third largest city and the second largest urbanized city after Prague. Ostrava is the central city of the Ostrava District in the Moravian-Silesian Voivodeship. The municipal administration has special powers. It was founded at the confluence of the Opava, Oder, Lucina and Ostorvice rivers. The distance of the city from the border with Slovakia is 12 km and the distance from the border with Poland is 12 km. The city, founded in 1267, remained a small town until the discovery of high-quality coal deposits in the area in 1763. The city, which entered a rapid growth process in the following years, became a full industrial city with the settlement of iron and steel works. Today Vitkovice and the coal mines are located in the center of the town, as factories have grown around them. Because of this, pollution is one of the biggest problems in this city. In 1994 coal mines and coal operations near the city were closed. In 1998 the Vitkovice iron and steel works in the center was closed. There are still open iron and steel factories in the city.
